Unshackled

Some of you are already aware of know Dogs Deserve Better, an organization devoted to unchaining dogs. Their founder Tamira Thayne was arrested for trespassing in January for providing food, water and straw to 2 chained dogs. In June the dogs' owners contacted her and surrendered both dogs after realizing they deserve a better life than one on a chain. This was filmed the day Tamira picked the dogs up.

They remind us of Buddy, Merci & Sam the day Jan opened the back door and they walked outside for the first time without being attached to a leash. They were so excited when they realized they had the freedom to run and play outside.

If the video doesn't play, click here.

We Funny Farmers can't understand the fascination so many humans have with confining a dog to the outer corner of a property to live a solitary life chained, hungry and thirsty, freezing or sweltering, often without shelter -- or at least a proper shelter. This is no life for a child's stuffed toy, let alone a living dog. At least that's what we think about a dog living life on the end of a chain. We're not barking and meowing about a dog that spends some time indoors with family and some outdoors. We mean those dogs who live chained outside 24/7/12, no matter what the season or whether they're sick or old and arthritic.

You can read more on the story of the two dogs on the Dogs Deserve Better website.

Before we forget,  Jan received the Life is Good award from Karen Jo of Herman's Hideaway today. We just got online and we're already being kicked off, so she'll have to tell us all who she wants to pass it on to another time.  Thanks for sharing this with our Jan. We think she deserves it.

Okay, Jan, do we all get a treat now?  Kidding, we're just kidding.

Have a purring and tail wagging day.

  1. I admit it, I once stole a dog in a bad situation. Starving, terrible mange, URI. He was the best dog I ever had. I don't regret taking him, ever. Some people are just mean and stupid.

  3. You made mama cry. But in a good way. We are so happy for these woofies.
Mama's family had a woofie that was on a chain but it was on a run that was pretty big, and the chain was attached to a wire that was above. He had basically the whole yard to roam. And his woofie house had double INSULATION plus straw and blankies in the winter, and he never wanted to come in! He would cry to go back to his warm little house. Mama's dad went out every evening before bed to talk to him and give him treats and ask if he wanted in. Only in the summer, cause they had air conditioning! He became the oldest woofie in town cause he was safe most of the time. But if he wanted to roam, he got out of his collar and took off. He'd always come back. Pretty smart!

  4. Congrats on your award!!! At least some woofies have happy endings.....Mommy and Dad in the past rescued Heidi a 7 month old St. Bernard from a bad breeder. Apparently they were not able to sell her and she was alone in a dirty fenced in space behind a office building. She was under fed and messy. They loved her for 11 years even though she shredded the couch, Mom & Dad's bed, some shoes and a chair!=^Y^=

  5. We cannot agree with you more.. it saddens us to see dogs being confined/ chained outside the house, regardless of the weather. Good thing is don't get winter here, but the heat can sometimes be bad. Don't quite understand why some people want to keep dogs but don't want to treat them properly!!

  7. Congrats on the great award! I totally agree on the woofie thing. Several years before I came here my Dad and Mom rescued two sister woofies who were tied to trees. Dad said they were great woofies and they lived here for lots of years...without chains...and they too were so happy!

  9. Congratulations on the award! We agree, Jan definitely deserves it! :)

Yeah, we don't understand why someone would chain a dog up, either. It's just inhumane and flat out WRONG.

  12. It's so sad when people don't take care of their pets. Why have a pet if it's not going to be part of the family? At least those two doggies will hopefully have a better life now.

  19. Nothing makes me more angry (and sad) than to see a dog chained up. It really is the worst thing you could do to such a warm, sociable, living creature. There really should be laws passed banning this practice - it's inhumane. I don't see it this side of the world so I think it isn't allowed here by animal welfare laws. Thank goodness there are some people fighting this in America.
